3DS Leads Weekly Japanese Hardware Sales As PSP Closes The Gap

The Nintendo 3DS led the Japanese hardware charts this week, while the PSP nearly caught up with the recently-released handheld in terms of sales on a weekly basis, reports tracking firm Media Create.

For the week ended March 27, the Nintendo 3DS sold 50,710 units, approximately 250 units more than the standard PSP hardware.

With the sales of the standard hardware and the PSP Go combined, Sony's handheld platform overtook the 3DS on the combined hardware sales chart.

PSP sales more than doubled this week, correlating with the release of Square Enix's Final Fantasy IV: Complete Collection, which led the Japanese software sales charts.

With the exception of the 3DS, all platforms saw an increase in sales from last week, causing some slight shuffling in the overall rankings.

Below are the full sales rankings from Media Create for the week ended March 27, 2011. (The second chart lumps together sales of all models in a given line of hardware.)

Weekly sales reports of hardware in Japan is the most useless piece of data on existence on the Earth. Japanese hardware market is almost 100% software/hit driven. It's a reflection of what popular game was released in that week, nothing more nothing less (well maybe less).
