Latest Japanese Sales Charts - Week Ending February 1
Any suspicions that the Pokémon bubble may finally have burst have been thoroughly disproved in Japan this week, as the release of the latest Game Boy Advance titles in the series have jointly brought in 1,010,000 units in sale in just one week – this despite the slow time of year and the fact that the games are merely remakes of the original Game Boy versions.
By comparison total software sales in the country as a whole was only 1,656,000, with third place title Hajime no Ippo 2
(Victorious Boxers 2
in the West) selling a respectable, but by comparison insignificant, 116,000 units.
As expected this staggering performance has also had a marked effect on hardware sales with the Game Boy Advance dominating with a 56.22% market share. With the PlayStation 2 weathering the storm at 34.49% it is the GameCube that has suffered the most with a new low of just 8.03%. Xbox sales, meanwhile, continue to be of virtually no significance with a risible 0.60% market share.
