Video game middleware provider Havok will expand its business to support the military and simulation industries, according to a notice sent to Gamasutra.
The company has launched a new Military and Simulation unit dedicated specifically to those industries, led by product management veteran Cory Kumm.
"With more and more demand for Havok’s technologies in the Military and Simulation sectors, this initiative will enable us to address our customers’ needs with a dedicated business unit, while keeping our focus on developing leading game technologies," said Havok managing director David Coghlan. "We are very pleased to bring Cory Kumm on board to lead the business unit and we look forward to seeing Havok technology used in new and innovative ways.”
Havok's suite of technologies include physics simulation, navigational AI, animation and behavior, and simulated destruction. More information about the services offered by the Military and Simulation division is available on the company's website.
Yeah I heard they were opening up shop somewhere in Canada for contracting work. Havok is just as much in the business of developing their own software as they are making customer specific solutions.
They may have trouble winning contracts in the US and Canada since each branch of the military already hires companies to make their own custom simulations. Military contracting is extremely competitive and they will have to run against industry giants. Its definitely not a one size fits all problem and building military sims requires a great deal of subject matter expertise from logistics to execution.
