Saling The World: Portal 2 Leads Cross-Platform Charts Worldwide

Gamasutra's weekly column, "Saling The World", covers the top five sellers for every available platform in the United States, Japan, and Europe, providing an important update of sales patterns worldwide.

This week's charts, with data taken from April 21st, 2011, find Valve's Portal 2 topping sales across multiple platforms in its debut week in North America and the UK, while Pokemon Typing DS emerges as a big seller in Japan.

Data for "Saling The World" comes courtesy of the public sales information on Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, and Amazon.co.jp, with sales split out for each platform and territory, and pre-orders disregarded. This results in a true sense of what games are selling worldwide on the real-time updated service, as follows:

Multiplatform
North America: 1. Portal 2 (Valve, PS3), 2. Portal 2 (Valve, X360), 3. Epic Mickey - Collector's Edition (Disney, Wii), 4. Mortal Kombat (Warner Bros, PS3), 5. Just Dance 2 (Ubisoft, Wii).

Japan: 1. Battle & Get: Pokemon Typing DS (Nintendo, DS), 2. Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 2: Professional (Square Enix, DS), 3. Dai-2-Ji Super Robot Taisen Z Hakai-hen - Special ZII Box (Banpresto, PSP), 4. Dai-2-Ji Super Robot Taisen Z Hakai-hen (Banpresto, PSP), 5. Pro Yakyuu Spirits 2011 (Konami, PS3).

UK: 1. Zumba Fitness (505 Games, Wii), 2. Portal 2 (Valve, X360), 3. Portal 2 (Valve, PS3), 4. Mortal Kombat (Warner Bros, PS3), 5. Portal 2 (Valve, PC).

Valve's Portal 2 leads as this week's biggest-selling console title stateside, with the Steam-enhanced PS3 edition proving the more popular port of the game in its debut week.

Portal 2 comes up short against reigning chart champ Zumba Fitness in the UK, while the keyboard-bundled typing tutor Battle & Get: Pokemon Typing DS enjoys a successful premiere week in Japan.


Nintendo Wii
North America: 1. Epic Mickey - Collector's Edition (Disney), 2. Just Dance 2 (Ubisoft), 3. Zumba Fitness (Majesco), 4. Michael Jackson: The Experience (Ubisoft), 5. Mario Kart Wii (Nintendo).

Japan: 1. Billy's Boot Camp: Wii de Enjoy Diet! (Rocket Company), 2. Wii Party (Nintendo), 3. Wii Fit Plus with Balance Board (Nintendo), 4. Fitness Party (Namco Bandai), 5. Wii Sports Resort (Nintendo).

UK: 1. Zumba Fitness (505 Games), 2. Wii Fit Plus with Balance Board (Nintendo), 3. Just Dance (Ubisoft), 4. Just Dance 2 (Ubisoft), 5. Michael Jackson: The Experience (Ubisoft).

The discounted Collector's Edition of Disney's Epic Mickey is a popular pick among Amazon's customers, and currently leads as the platform's biggest-selling title in North America.

A sequel in Rocket Company's Wii de Enjoy Diet! exercise series heads the week's results in Japan, while Zumba Fitness maintains a healthy lead in Europe.


Xbox 360
North America: 1. Portal 2 (Valve), 2. Mortal Kombat (Warner Bros), 3. Kinectimals (Microsoft), 4. Call of Duty: Black Ops (Activision), 5. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II - Collector's Edition (LucasArts).

Japan: 1. Otomedius Excellent (Konami), 2. Monster Hunter Frontier Online Forward.1 Premium Package (Capcom), 3. Crysis 2 (EA Games), 4. Bullet Soul (5pb), 5. Mass Effect 2 (EA Games).

UK: 1. Portal 2 (Valve), 2. Mortal Kombat (Warner Bros), 3. Call of Duty: Black Ops (Activision), 4. FIFA 11 (EA Sports), 5. Dragon Age II (EA Games).

Bargain-hunting Amazon shoppers put the discounted Collector's Edition of The Force Unleashed II and Kinectimals among this week's top Xbox 360 sellers in the United States.

Konami's shoot-'em-up sequel Otomedius Excellent debuts to fast sales in Japan, as Portal 2 and Mortal Kombat sweep the charts in the UK.


PlayStation 3
North America: 1. Portal 2 (Valve), 2. Mortal Kombat (Warner Bros), 3. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II - Collector's Edition (LucasArts), 4. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12 (EA Sports), 5. God of War III (SCEA).

Japan: 1. Pro Yakyuu Spirits 2011 (Konami), 2. Clannad (Prototype), 3. Shin Sangoku Musou 6 (Koei), 4. SOCOM 4: US Navy SEALs (SCEI), 5. Nier Replicant (Square Enix).

UK: 1. Portal 2 (Valve), 2. Mortal Kombat (Warner Bros), 3. FIFA 11 (EA Sports), 4. Call of Duty: Black Ops (Activision), 5. Dragon Age II (EA Games).

Portal 2 and Mortal Kombat also lead the PS3 charts in North America and the UK this week, with Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12 returning to the top five stateside.

Konami's baseball franchise sequel Pro Yakyuu Spirits 2011 takes the lead in Japan, where Prototype's visual novel Clannad overtakes Koei's Shin Sangoku Musou 6 for second place.


PC
North America: 1. Portal 2 (Valve), 2. StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty (Blizzard), 3. The Sims: Medieval (EA Games), 4. Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (EA Games), 5. Rift (Trion Worlds).

Japan: 1. Monster Hunter Frontier Online Forward.1 Premium Package (Capcom), 2. Steins;Gate (Nitro Plus), 3. Monster Hunter Frontier Online 2010 Anniversary Package (Capcom), 4. Monster Hunter Frontier Online 2010 Anniversary Package - Limited Edition (Capcom), 5. Crysis 2 (EA Games).

UK: 1. Portal 2 (Valve), 2. The Sims: Medieval (EA Games), 3. Dragon Age II (EA Games), 4. Football Manager 2011 (Sega), 5. The Sims 3 (EA Games).

Portal 2 emerges as a big seller on PC platforms worldwide, as a new expansion for Capcom's MMORPG Monster Hunter Frontier Online leads the week's PC sales rankings in Japan.

North America: 1. Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars (Ubisoft), 2. Ridge Racer 3D (Namco Bandai), 3. Rayman 3D (Ubisoft), 4. Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 3D (Konami), 5. Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition (Capcom).

Japan: 1. Pilotwings Resort (Nintendo), 2. Layton Kyouju to Kiseki no Kamen (Nintendo), 3. Nintendogs + Cats: Shiba & New Friends (Nintendo), 4. Sengoku Musou Chronicle (Koei), 5. Nintendogs + Cats: Toy Poodle & New Friends (Nintendo).

UK: 1. Pilotwings Resort (Nintendo), 2. Nintendogs + Cats: Golden Retriever & New Friends (Nintendo), 3. Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars (LucasArts), 4. Ridge Racer 3D (Namco Bandai), 5. Super Monkey Ball 3D (Sega).

A spate of high review scores and positive word-of-mouth puts Ubisoft's strategy game Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars at the top of North America's current Nintendo 3DS sales charts.

Pilotwings Resort continues to lead the UK charts, and finishes at first place in its premiere week in Japan.

Japan: 1. Battle & Get: Pokemon Typing DS (Nintendo), 2. Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 2: Professional (Square Enix), 3. Meitantei Conan: Aoki Houseki no Rinbukyoku (Bandai Namco), 4. Rockman Zero Collection (Capcom), 5. Ninokuni (Level 5).

UK: 1. Let's Draw! (Majesco), 2. Pokemon White Version (Nintendo), 3. Art Academy (Nintendo), 4. Pokemon Black Version (Nintendo), 5. New Super Mario Bros. (Nintendo).

Pokemon White and Black continue to dominate Nintendo DS platform sales in North America, as Guitar Hero: On Tour Decades makes a surprise return to the charts during an Amazon clearance sale.

Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 2: Professional competes with newcomers Pokemon Typing DS and Meitantei Conan: Aoki Houseki no Rinbukyoku for chart placement in Japan, while Majesco's Let's Draw! manages to overtake Pokemon White Version in the UK.


PlayStation Portable
North America: 1. Final Fantasy IV Complete Collection (Square Enix), 2. Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep (Square Enix), 3. Dissidia 012: Duodecim Final Fantasy (Square Enix), 4. Need for Speed: Most Wanted (EA Games), 5. Knights in the Nightmare (Atlus).

Japan: 1. Dai-2-Ji Super Robot Taisen Z Hakai-hen - Special ZII Box (Banpresto), 2. Dai-2-Ji Super Robot Taisen Z Hakai-hen (Banpresto), 3. Monster Hunter Portable 3rd (Capcom), 4. Pro Yakyuu Spirits 2011 (Konami), 5. Final Fantasy IV Complete Collection (Square Enix).

UK: 1. Final Fantasy IV Complete Collection (Square Enix), 2. Dissidia 012: Duodecim Final Fantasy (Square Enix), 3. Football Manager Handheld 2011 (Sega), 4. FIFA 11 (EA Sports), 5. Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines (Ubisoft).

Final Fantasy IV Complete Collection earns top honors in the PSP charts in North America and Europe following a recent successful debut.

Banpresto's Super Robot Wars sequel Dai-2-Ji Super Robot Taisen Z Hakai-hen takes first place in its debut week in Japan, meanwhile, pushing former chart leader Monster Hunter Portable 3rd to third place.
