The Carmageddon series is set to relaunch next year with Carmageddon: Reincarnation, developed by original UK creator and now IP holder, Stainless Games.

Slated for a 2012 release and currently in the early stages of pre-production development, the game will return to its roots, featuring dark humor, silly power-ups and extreme violence.

Patrick Buckland, CEO and co-founder of Isle of Wight, UK based-Stainless, explained, "Originally an ambitious title that tested the hardware limits of its day, we’re excited that the game will finally get the showcase it deserves on today’s platforms."

"We will make sure the existing fans get what they want and expect from a Carmageddon game, and a new generation discovers the delights of sliding into a Cunning Stunt."

Carmageddon: Reincarnation is set to be released for digital download, although no specific platforms have yet been confirmed.

The company has confirmed with Gamasutra that it now owns the rights to the game, with COO Matt Edmunds stating, "Essentially we own absolutely everything - the name, all the actual games, trademarks, the IP, URLS, the lot."

Stainless Games developed the original Carmageddon and Carmageddon II, before Torus Games took over the series and released Carmageddon TDR 2000.

The company has since built up a reputation in the digital download space, with numerous titles released such as Risk: Factions, Magic The Gathering: Duels of the Planeswalkers and Red Baron Arcade.
