Uncharted 3 Ships 3.8M Units On Launch Day

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has revealed that Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, released last week, shipped 3.8 million units worldwide on launch day.

The company noted that the game is now on course to be the biggest selling title of the trilogy, and one of the biggest releases of 2011. [UPDATE:] Sony confirmed to Gamasutra that the figure given is shipped, rather than sold.

Nick Caplin, head of communications at SCEE, said, "Uncharted 3 is a blockbuster and these incredible sales figures reflect that."

"Consumers are clearly as eager to play the game as critics were to heap praise upon it, and the team at Naughty Dog deserve this fantastic reception at retail."

The game was lauded by critics and gamers alike at release, although it didn't manage to steal the top spot away from Battlefield 3 in the UK software charts.

I doubt, that it is possible to give sales numbers for the launch day, so I would say it is shipped. Besides, the new comes from Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, but I can't imagine, they are talking about Euro-sales? I think it is worldwide?

Ok I am sure this game will sell a ton but anyone can ship millions of copies on day 1 why not brag about what you sold.....

Well, in real terms 3.8 million counts (certainly for Sony's shareholders) since as far as I'm aware, shipped means sold to retailers. Unless this game really has a problem moving, that money's already in Sony's bank. Now it's the retailers' problem. And frankly, since they're sitting on all those copies of a product pretty well suited to shift, they'll almost certainly push those 3.8 million through to consumers some which way in the fullness of time. At least this announcement buoys shareholder sentiment somewhat following some fairly negative financial press rather than wait around for the REAL sell through... Maybe that's too cynical an attitude though.
