Modern Warfare 3 Claims Highest Grossing UK Entertainment Opening Week Ever

November 14, 2011 | By Mike Rose

Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 took to the top of the UK software sales charts last week in its opening week on sale, claiming the highest grossing opening week for any entertainment title ever.

However, while the title saw higher opening week revenue than its predecessor Black Ops, it actually sold 1.6 percent less units than the previous title.

For the week ended November 5, and according to data from tracking firm Chart-Track, the releases of blockbusters Modern Warfare 3 and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim helped the industry to its biggest weekly revenues ever recorded.

Skyrim was forced to take up position two behind Modern Warfare 3, although it definitely held its own, securing its place as the fifth biggest launch title of the year.

Elsewhere, Mind Candy's Moshi Monsters: Moshling Zoo for Nintendo DS also entered the charts in its opening weekend, taking up position at number seven.

Last week's number one, Battlefield 3, was forced down to number three with a 62 percent drop in sales week-over-week.

Below are Chart-Track's all-platforms sales charts, which include unit sales of all versions of a given title, and the individual platform charts, which treat individual SKUs separately.
