Newsbrief: While Sony has since turned its spotlight away from the long-running PlayStation 2, the console is still going strong. So strong, in fact, that its worldwide holiday sales equaled those of the just-launched PlayStation Vita.

During the tail end of 2011, the PlayStation 2 sold 500,000 units worldwide, and Sony said the console "continues its sales momentum and remains robust sales especially in emerging counties and regions such as Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Southeast Asia and South America."

At CES in Las Vegas, Sony revealed that PlayStation hardware across all platforms sold over 6.5 million units during the holidays, including 3.9 million PlayStation 3 units, 1.6 million PSP units, and half a million PlayStation Vitas.

I don't see the PS3 having the same success as its predecessors.

I was going to reply 'that's crazy!' but then I remembered I bought a new one last year because I'd 'missed' kingdom hearts.

Well I bought a refurbed one last year because my first one broke down. Excellent system with not to be missed games. Same thing with PS1, although I bought two more due to the lens problems of yore. My problem is, is this why they cut the backwards compatibility on PS3?
