Japanese Sales Charts, Week Ending October 9

Although the Japanese sales chart appears even more moribund this week than last, with only one new entry in the top ten, significant sales of the latest Dragon Ball Z game have actually seen sales increase by 43 percent on last week, to 89 percent of the weekly average.

Dragon Ball Z Sparking! (to be known as Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi in the West) sold a total of 325,589 units in its first week. This is less than the approximately 427,000 unit first week total of its immediate predecessor, but more than the approximately 324,000 units of Dragon Ball Z 2 (aka Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 2). The new game should now easily reach at least half a million unit sales, as Dragon Ball Z continues to be one of Bandai’s best selling series.

With the second-ranked title accumulating just 39,569 sales there has been little other activity of interest in the top 100, with well reviewed Game Boy Advance sequel Gunstar Super Heroes only entering the chart at number fourteen, with less than 8,000 sales.

Hardware sales are almost entirely unchanged from last week, with the Nintendo DS gaining a 29.68 percent market share with 39,137 sales, followed by the Game Boy Advance with a 26.33 percent share (split into 24,568 Game Boy Micros, 9,837 Game Boy Advance SP and 323 original Game Boy Advance). The PSP was in third place with a 23.57 percent share of the market and 31,089 sales, with the PlayStation 2 at 23.57 percent and 25,328 unit sales. The GameCube accounted for just 1.13 percent of the market and the Xbox for 0.08 percent.
