The Defense: joinDOTA’s Flagship Dota 2 Tournament
Returns and Hits Danish Television
Press Release For Immediate Release
Berlin – 7th September 2015 – In 2011 joinDOTA, a Freaks 4U Gaming project, conceived the first large international online tournament series for Dota 2 to date – The Defense . There were four seasons that cultivated an ardent community and built the foundations for the game’s present status as an established eSports title.
Today, after a two year hiatus, The Defense returns bigger than ever before and with a base prize pool of $ 75,000. Through ticket sales this amount will continue to rise. Over the next ten weeks, selected matches will be aired live on Danish television for the first time ever on the TV 2 ZULU broadcasting channel. This cooperation makes it possible to reach an entirely new target market and to establish eSports on television. As part of the TV show, Jacob “ Maelk” Toft-Andersen will commentate the matches in Danish, with the other joinDOTA team members, Toby “ TobiWan” Dawson, Austin “ Capitalist” Walsh, Gareth “ Durka” Bateson and William “ Blitz” Lee, producing the international livestream in English on Twitch. Every Monday to Wednesday from 8 pm CEST the broadcasting crew welcomes Dota 2 fans live from their Berlin-based studios.
Livestream: Starting today, from 8 pm CEST via www.the-defense.com
The Defense Live On TV
With the return of The Defense, joinDOTA is partnering up with Danish broadcaster TV 2 DANMARK to create the interactive eSports show “eSport på ZULU” for the Danish comedy and youth channel TV 2 ZULU. Twice a week, for a period of ten weeks, Jacob “Maelk” Toft-Andersen and Dota 2 expert, Troels “ SyndereN” Nielsen, will cast matches from The Defense as part of the Danish TV coverage. Since eSports is one of the fastest-growing sports markets in the world, it’s a natural step for ZULU to bring eSports content to Danish television. The ZULU eSports program is an AFP production (Advertiser-Funded Programming) that is partly sponsored by the largest Danish vendor of sports-betting games, Danske Spil. By using this format a smooth fusion of traditional TV viewers and internet users can be created, engaging an entirely new audience in the Dota 2 experience and allowing them to enjoy the thrilling matches of joinDOTA’s flagship tournament, The Defense.

For the second group phase, six additional teams are directly invited to form a pool of twelve teams (2 x 6 teams). For the finals only three teams will progress to the first-ever The Defense LAN finals. On-site these teams will face a fourth invited team to fight for a spot on the winners’ podium.

“On a personal note I am really happy we have brought back The Defense and I hope not only the community veterans but also new members are able to enjoy the coverage,” says Toby “TobiWan” Dawson, commentator, joinDOTA. “It is also great to have TV 2 Danmark on board bringing eSports to television and giving ‘syndereN’ and ‘Maelk’ the chance to broadcast in their own language. I am also really looking forward to utilizing our new studio!”
“At TV 2 ZULU we focus on the most trending themes among our young viewers. ESports is the fastest growing sport in the world and we would like to create a show, where our audience can experience the world of eSports in a Danish setting and with Danish commentators. The program will be available on all ZULU platforms and we will integrate comments and questions from our users to make it interactive”, says Sune Roland, head of TV 2 ZULU.
