You can recreate some of Unity Pro's features in Unity Free, given the time and know-how. Here, I demonstrate how you can do Level of Detail meshes, limited RenderTextures/Post-Processing, and LightProbes.
What's an indie developer to do with new or emergent gameplay if their players don't want to be taught? Here's a series of failed attempts at answering that question from the XBLIG/PC game Cute Things Dying Violently.
Xbox Live Indie Game developers frequently have to price their games at $1 just to get noticed. They see that as devaluing their hard work, naturally. But there's a much more grim reason for reducing prices on XBLIG... lower market demand.
