The barrier of entry for game design and development has been significantly lowered since the days of Pong, unfortunately it's still not low enough for most people to participate in the process.

Sandbox MMOs seem to not garner as many subscriptions, while single-player sandbox games keep being smash hits. In this article I'm trying to find out why and make a case that there is significant potential in the idea of a AAA sandbox MMO.
