Mark Lloyd's Blog

I live in Scotland on the edge of the Cairngorms with my partner of 25 years, Dianne. After 20 years working in and around the video games industry, I now enjoy helping Development Studios be better at what they do.

Credited on over 200 titles including the Grand Theft Auto series and Call of Duty, I spent 12 years as a Rockstar Games Studio Head, building and running Rockstar Lincoln from the ground up. Followed by The Blast Furnace, a 50 veteran studio built for Activision to develop mobile games.

Before the games industry, 12 years aeronautical engineering in the Royal Air Force gave me active learning about pressure, delivery, systems and what being part of a real team was — knowing that getting the work right was essential for saving lives as well as saving time and money.

For the last five years, my consultancy business has meant sharing all that learning and experience with my clients, working within their teams and with managers to help them grow or sustain what they have. All while assisting them in preventing a fall into a never-ending cycle of damaging crunch or project feast and famine.

In my spare time, I volunteered as a mentor for small businesses in Dundee and have been both a Part-Time Lecturer in Project Management and an Enterprise Advisor within schools in the Leeds area.

The core problem with enforcing crunch is the effect, damage, and loss of capability in the people and teams. Creativity is at the heart of development, and it comes from the people. Smash the team, and you damage everything.
