The NPD Group has released the list of the top ten best-selling video games for the entirety of 2006 in North America, with Electronic Arts' PlayStation 2 version of Madden NFL 07 taking top honors with more than 1.8 million units sold.

Titles for Sony's console proved to be the most prolific on the chart, with PlayStation 2 releases accounting for five of the chart's ten spots.

The second most selling title for the year was Nintendo's New Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo DS, which sold more than 1.5 million units, a number equaled by Square Enix's PlayStation 2 action role-playing game Kingdom Hearts II, the annual chart's third entry.

A pair of action titles for the Xbox 360 took the next two spots on chart, with Microsoft's Epic Games developed Gears of War ranking as the fourth top selling title for the year, followed by Ubisoft's Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter . As previously reported, Gears sold more than one million units in the U.S. since its release on November 7, while NPD reports that Ghost Recon sold more than 913,000 units since its debut in March.

Square Enix's epic PlayStation 2 role-playing game Final Fantasy XII sold more than 895,000 units in North America in 2006, solidifying its sixth place position on the chart, while Take Two's Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories for the PlayStation 2 followed in the seventh position with more than 860,000 units sold.

Two sports titles from Electronic Arts reigned as the eighth and ninth top selling titles for 2006. NCAA Football 07 for the PlayStation 2 ranked as the eighth top selling title for the year with more than 849,000 units sold, followed by the Xbox 360 version of Madden NFL 07, which sold in excess of 826,000 units in 2006.

The annual chart, as reprinted in USA Today, was rounded out by Nintendo's Touch Generations branded Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day! for the Nintendo DS, which sold 792,000 units since its release in April.
