In the final software chart before the Golden Week series of national holidays (which will likely delay the subsequent chart by a number of days), Nintendo has seen the first Wii title at number one in the Japanese video game charts since January.

Super Paper Mario registered over 144,000 unit sales Ė well in line with previous Paper Mario games, despite the Wiiís so far smaller (but rapidly growing) userbase. The game was only one of a number of new entries in the charts, though, with sales considerably up on previous weeks.

The second highest new entry is visual novel Fate/Stay Night on PlayStation 2, from specialist publisher Kadokawa Shoten - which almost beat Super Paper Mario, with just under 135,000 unit sales.

The third highest new entry of the week is an expansion pack for Shin Megami Tensei role-playing game spin-off Persona 3, with both the expansion and a bundled version with the original game selling 90,369 units on PlayStation 2.

Another strongly performing new entry is Nodame Cantabile for the Nintendo DS, with the anime-based music game selling 50,785 units. The final new entry of the week, at number five, is the latest re-release of the original Final Fantasy, this time on PSP, with 48,559 unit sales.

Once again there are no PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 games in the top thirty, with the second highest ranking PSP game being Monster Hunter Portable 2nd at number eighteen.

(Hardware sales data for the week in Japan will be available from tomorrow morning.)
