Officials from publisher and developer Capcom have announced that Wii exclusive title Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles has now shipped over 1 million units worldwide since its released in November 2007.

A lightgun game featuring scenes from most of the core numbered games in the series, the title was one of the first to make use of the Wii Zapper peripheral with which it was bundled in Japan.

The game is the second Resident Evil title for the Wii, following the special edition of Resident Evil 4, which exceeded Capcom estimates with sales of over 1 million units. An adaptation of GameCube exclusive Resident Evil 0 has also been recently announced, but is so far only confirmed for Japan.

Key sequel Resident Evil 5 is currently scheduled only for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, although these latest results have shown the strong following the series has gained on Nintendo hardware, following its period of exclusivity on the GameCube.

The Resident Evil series (known as Biohazard in Japan) as a whole has sold over 34.5 million units globally as of February 29th, 2008 and continues to be one of Capcoms most critically and commercially successful franchises.

The company has also experienced considerable successful with its live action movie adaptations, the latest of which has generated 16 billion ($147m) in revenues in Japan alone. A full length computer generated movie, which sticks more closely to the game plot and characters is also being developed.
