Electronic Arts is developing a video game based on Hasbro's G.I. Joe brand, tying in with the upcoming theatrical release or G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, a live-action film from Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Entertainment.
Presumed to ship with the movie's opening on August 7th, the G.I. Joe game will be available for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, Wii, Nintendo DS, PlayStation Portable, and mobile devices.
The title will feature an exclusive storyline picking up after the film's plot, and promises to let players "re-create and re-live the greatest moments from the film, cartoon series and action figure toy line." A single-screen cooperative mode will be available for two players to work as a team to fight against the Cobra terrorist organization.
EA did not specifically name any characters that might appear in the game -- such as fan favorite Snake-Eyes or the unfortunately named Skidmark -- but did say that there will be 12 G.I. Joe characters in all, each with unique abilities and weapons.
"As Hasbro and Paramount Pictures reignite the G.I. Joe property this year with an all-new toy line and film, EA is excited to play a major role in bringing this icon of pop culture history to a new generation of enthusiasts through interactive gaming," said EA Hasbro's general manager and vice president Chip Lange.
Hasbro's Digital Gaming and Media GM Mark Blecher added, "G.I. Joe has been an icon of action for 45 years. EA has tapped the legacy of the G.I. Joe vs. Cobra saga to create an amazing interactive experience inspired by the movie, comic books, animated series, and iconography that we hope will resonate with millions of fans."
