On the eve of the PlayStation 3 launch in North America, officials from publisher Take-Two have announced that the company currently has twenty PlayStation 3 titles in development, including those from separate publishing division Rockstar Games.
More than seven titles are planned for the company’s 2K Sports line, including basketball simulation NBA 2K7, ice hockey title NHL 2K7 and baseball game The BIGS. Additionally, College Hoops 2K7 is expected in January and Major League Baseball 2K7 in late winter 2007. NBA 2K8 and NHL 2K7 are planned for September 2007, with “additional high profile licensed and original new franchises” also on the way.
“More than seven” games were promised from Rockstar Games, but only previously announced titles Grand Theft Auto IV (no longer a timed exclusive for the PlayStation formats) and L.A. Noire were mentioned specifically. The only hint as to the other titles came with the suggestion that there would be other “extensions of blockbuster Rockstar Games franchises”, which would potentially include games such as Midnight Club, Bully or Red Dead Revolver.
The only title specifically mentioned for the company’s 2K Games label was comic book license The Darkness by Starbreeze. The existence of a potential PlayStation 3 version of Irrational Games’ PC and Xbox 360 title BioShock has still not been confirmed.
"We applaud Sony for helping raise the bar in the next generation of gaming," said Paul Eibeler, Take-Two's president and CEO. "As the hardware transitions to the next generation, Take-Two is working hard to position itself to emerge as a leading next generation publisher, with our focus on delivering quality titles and harnessing technologies like Sony's cell processors and Blu-ray storage capacity, as well as its proprietary Sixaxis wireless controller. We're not asking gamers to wait until we can evolve into the technologies. From day-one, our development team will astonish gamers with the fullest, deepest and most entertaining titles on the market."
