Unity Asset Store Approaches 20,000 Registered Users

April 7, 2011 | By Kyle Orland

Of the over 400,000 developers using the Unity 3D engine to make games, nearly 20,000 have signed up to purchase content from the Unity Asset Store, according to maker Unity Technologies.

Top asset makers are reportedly making almost $1,000 a day from store sales, up from January where the top seller made only $4,000 for the entire month.

Launched last November, the Unity Asset Store lets developers download hundreds of premade models, art, sounds, scripts and even full development environments created by other users. Unity takes a 30 percent cut from sales, with the rest going to the original creator.

Top content on the store currently includes pipeline management tools, vehicle physics simulators, a variety of GUI makers and tools that integrate Mixamo's animation tools with Unity.

The Unity Web player has been downloaded over 45 million times, and the company recently paired with GameString to develop a cloud-based version.
