Alongside NPD's U.S. video game retail sales figures for May 2011, Microsoft announced that Xbox 360 led its home console competitors with 270,000 units sold, up 39 percent compared to May 2010.
Xbox 360 has been the top-selling home console at U.S. retail for 11 of the past 12 months, Microsoft said. The console, now in its seventh year, is also "on pace to have the biggest year in its history," and Microsoft touts that no other console has achieved such a landmark seven years into its lifecycle.
The company also noted that Xbox 360 game sales at retail reached $140 million this month, while total retail spend, which includes hardware, software, and accessories, reached $265 million, "still the highest among current generation consoles," Microsoft said.
Top 10 NPD games at U.S. retail for May 2011 included L.A. Noire
, Portal 2
, Mortal Kombat
, and Brink
, all of which were released on Xbox 360.
Looking toward the second half of 2011, Microsoft says that Xbox 360 will become the top-selling home console of 2011 by offering "the biggest blockbuster games, Kinect games and experiences, as well as movies, music and TV together all in one place."
, the company said, "in anticipation of another record year in 2011, Microsoft announced the size of the Kinect games portfolio will triple by the end of the year."
