December 19, 2011 | By Danny Cowan

[In this weekly feature, Gamasutra rounds up the week's most popular paid and free iPhone and iPod Touch games, as current on the iTunes App Store.]

This week's top paid iPhone game titles on the App Store, as captured on December 19th 2011, are as follows:

1. Angry Birds ($0.99)
2. Grand Theft Auto III ($4.99)
3. Fruit Ninja ($0.99)
4. Angry Birds Seasons ($0.99)
5. Bejeweled ($0.99)
6. Kick the Buddy ($0.99)
7. Sonic CD ($4.99)
8. Cut the Rope ($0.99)
9. Tetris ($0.99)
10. Tiny Wings ($0.99)

The iOS port of Rockstar's open-world crime drama Grand Theft Auto III racks up impressive sales in its premiere week, but comes up short against Rovio's chart-leading Angry Birds.

EA's Tetris reports a sharp sales decline after topping last week's chart, meanwhile, as PopCap's relaunched Bejeweled outsells AppZap's stress-relief title Kick the Buddy and Sega's 16-bit platformer Sonic CD at fifth place.

Here are this week's top free iPhone games:

1. Kick the Buddy Free
2. Zoo Story 2
3. The Sims FreePlay
4. Social Girl
5. Temple Run
6. Bakery Story: Christmas
7. Very Hungry Cat
8. FreeAppWall
9. Pretty Pet Salon Seasons
10. Modern War

A trial version of AppZap's Kick the Buddy heads the free app charts, resulting in a sales boost for the paid edition. TeamLava's Zoo Story 2 follows at second place, as EA's The Sims FreePlay takes third.

Last week's chart winner Modern War drops to tenth place in today's results, meanwhile, as iDevUA's recently released Very Hungry Cat falls to seventh after previously placing second.
