Oculus Rift 'many months away,' lacks suitable input device

November 4, 2014 | By Christian Nutt

Newsbrief: Speaking at Web Summit 2014 in Dublin, Oculus VR CEO Brendan Iribe said the Oculus Rift hardware is essentially ready to go -- but not until it finds a suitable input device, The Next Web reports.

Oculus' latest prototype, the Crescent Bay headset, is "largely finalized for a consumer product," Iribe said. Launch is "months, not years away, but many months." At its September unveiling, Iribe had said the Crescent Bay was "getting much, much closer to consumer Rift."

The Next Web reports, however, that Iribe said that mouse and keyboard, gamepad, and current-gen gesture controls are all inadequate for Oculus. What the company's plans are to fix that are not clear, however. No new control mechanisms were discussed either at Web Summit 2014 or at September's Oculus Connect developer conference. Oculus acquired Carbon, the design team that created the Xbox 360 controller, in June.
