Video: Curating culture through a new wave of video game events

November 7, 2014 | By Staff

Nightclubs, libraries, art festivals -- these aren't typically places you'll find video games, but London-based Wild Rumpus organizer Marie Foulston believes they should be.

Foulston is one of five leading organizers of a new wave of cultural video game events, including Babycastles (New York), Punk Arcade (Los Angeles), Hand Eye Society (Toronto), Fantastic Arcade (Austin), who came to GDC 2014 to talk about their experiences in starting and growing cultural video game events, and the unique and diverging motivations that guide their work.

It's worth watching, as these events are potentially bringing your games to new audiences, helping to build a more diverse, playful culture and community, and furthering the dialogue around games as an artistic medium.

We've gone ahead and embedded the free video of "Curating Video Game Culture: The New Wave of Video Game Events" above. You can also watch it here on the GDC Vault.

About the GDC Vault

In addition to this presentation, the GDC Vault offers numerous other free videos, audio recordings, and slides from many of the recent Game Developers Conference events, and the service offers even more members-only content for GDC Vault subscribers.

Those who purchased All Access passes to recent events like GDC, GDC Europe, and GDC Next already have full access to GDC Vault, and interested parties can apply for the individual subscription via a GDC Vault subscription page. Group subscriptions are also available: game-related schools and development studios who sign up for GDC Vault Studio Subscriptions can receive access for their entire office or company by contacting staff via the GDC Vault group subscription page. Finally, current subscribers with access issues can contact GDC Vault technical support.
