Square Enix subsidiary Eidos Montreal has built a new engine for PC and contemporary console game development that it plans to rely on as it moves forward on game development projects tied to its Deus Ex franchise.

Dubbed the Dawn Engine, this new tech is built atop a heavily modified version of the Glacier 2 engine that fellow Square Enix subsidiary IO Interactive uses to make Hitman Absolution.

"In the past, we've relied on existing engines for our games. But in the end, we found that our creative vision was somehow limited," reads a post on the company blog. "So we decided it was time for us to invest in creating an engine tailored for our needs."

Those needs appear to be tied up in making games with the Deus Ex license, as Eidos Montreal notes that "the Dawn Engine will form the cornerstone for all Deus Ex Universe projects."

Back in 2011 Eidos Montreal released Deus Ex: Human Revolution, then followed up on its critical and commercial success with a director's cut edition and a mobile tie-in, Deus Ex: The Fall.

More recently, it released Thief early this year and laid off 27 people shortly thereafter.
