The future of GameMaker, according to Yoyo Games and Playtech

The future of GameMaker, according to Yoyo Games and Playtech

February 20, 2015 | By Alex Wawro

GameMaker Studio creator Yoyo Games and its new owner Playtech issued a joint statement today in an attempt to assuage developer concerns about their recent $16.4 milliion acquisition deal, and it sheds a bit more light on what the future holds for developers who use the GameMaker toolset.

Most notably, Playtech and Yoyo Games respond to the common question of whether or not GameMaker's pricing model will change with "at this stage, no."

However, they added that "we are looking at ways in which we can extend the GameMaker reach within the developers’ community and it is more likely that we will look for ways to introduce other options to the free Standard Edition in the medium to long-term."

Going forward, both companies paint the deal as a way to put more resources towards development of the GameMaker toolset in support of both GameMaker customers and Playtech's internal game development studio Plamee, which is focused on making "casual games" like its debut Facebook title Cake Story.

"We can now push ahead and hire more people and make GameMaker: Studio an even better platform," wrote the GameMaker Studio team, including now-former CEO Sandy Duncan. "If there are any changes they will be additions to our plans," which include launching GameMaker Studio 2.0 sometime this year.
