Video: How Unity and tools like it can stifle your creativity

The democratization of game creation thanks to the decreasing price and increasing approachability of tools like Unreal and Unity is unabashedly a Good Thing for the game industry.

However, experienced game maker Cliff Harris believes it also has at least one big drawback: it stifles creativity. As part of the Indie Soapbox at the GDC 2015 Indie Summit, Harris took the stage to deliver a tongue-in-cheek tirade about how Unity and tools like it are keeping developers from achieving their peak potential.

It was a striking talk that Harris reflected on a bit later that day, when he spoke about the experience on a One Life Left vs. Gamasutra podcast recorded live at GDC.

If you'd like to see what he was talking about, you can now watch his segment of the Indie Soapbox at GDC 2015 -- a very brief, very watchable snippet of the full panel -- for free over on the GDC Vault's new YouTube channel.

About the GDC Vault

In addition to this presentation, the GDC Vault and its new YouTube channel offers numerous other free videos, audio recordings, and slides from many of the recent Game Developers Conference events, and the service offers even more members-only content for GDC Vault subscribers.

Those who purchased All Access passes to recent events like GDC, GDC Europe, and GDC Next already have full access to GDC Vault, and interested parties can apply for the individual subscription via a GDC Vault subscription page. Group subscriptions are also available: game-related schools and development studios who sign up for GDC Vault Studio Subscriptions can receive access for their entire office or company by contacting staff via the GDC Vault group subscription page. Finally, current subscribers with access issues can contact GDC Vault technical support.
