GameFly launches streaming service, exclusively on Amazon's Fire TV

June 2, 2015 | By Christian Nutt

GameFly has launched a brand new game streaming service. The company, best known for its rent-by-mail video game service, and which last year exited the direct-download space, has acquired streaming startup Playcast Media, which booted up in 2009 with plans to bring its services to cable TV subscribers around the globe.

The service will -- at least at its outset -- only be available on Amazon's Fire TV streaming box, which offers a dedicated console-like controller. Service consists of packages of games organized by genre, such as "Action" and "Adventure" as well as "Lego," among others, costs $6.99 for a month of unlimited access to seven titles. There is also a "gamer pack" which offers 16 games for $9.99. An Amazon account is required to join the service and purchase these packages.

More details are available at GameFly's site.

GameFly last year sold off its digital-download storefront, which reverted to the Direct2Drive branding it had prior to its 2011 acquisition. Playcast's streaming competitors OnLive and Gaikai were both ultimately acquired by Sony to create its PlayStation Now services.
