Microsoft rolls out Xbox 360 backwards compatibility to Xbox One

Microsoft rolls out Xbox 360 backwards compatibility to Xbox One

June 15, 2015 | By Alex Wawro

Early in Microsoft's E3 press conference today, Xbox's head of platform engineering Mike Ybarra took the stage to promise that the company's Xbox One console would be updated to natively support a selection of Xbox 360 games.

According to Ybarra, the company plans to make 100 Xbox 360 games playable on Xbox One consoles before the end of the year. The hassle for developers should be minimal, according to Ybarra.

"We've made this easy for game developers," said Ybarra. "They just need to approve titles showing up; no work is necessary on their part."

This is notable in light of the fact that when Microsoft announced the Xbox One at E3 two years ago, then-Xbox chief Marc Whitten explicitly noted that "back-compat doesn't really work" due to the differences between the Xbox One and Xbox 360 core architectures.
