Yu Suzuki and Ys Net's Shenmue 3 Kickstarter campaign wrapped up over the weekend with just over $6.3 million pledged, setting a new Kickstarter record for funds raised to support a video game's development.
It's not terribly surprising in light of the fact that the Shenmue 3 already broke the Kickstarter record for fastest game project to surpass $1 million pledged, having done so less than two hours after designer Yu Suzuki launched it from the stage of Sony's E3 2015 press conference. The campaign went on to surpass its $2 million funding goal nine hours after it launched.
While the $6.3 million figure means Shenmue 3 has toppled Koji Igarashi's Bloodstained as the most-funded video game project on Kickstarter, it's still only the third most-funded game project on the service behind the Ouya microconsole and the Exploding Kittens card game.
Like Bloodstained, Shenmue 3's development will not be funded solely from its Kickstarter coffers; last month, Suzuki noted that Ys Net was partnering with both Shibuya Entertainment and Sony itself to help produce, market and publish the game.
