New AbleGamers program aims to support game dev students with disabilities

New AbleGamers program aims to support game dev students with disabilities

August 31, 2015 | By Alex Wawro

The AbleGamers Charity is pouring some of its resources into a new AbleGamers Fellowship program aimed at supporting prospective game developers with disabilities through financial aid, internship opportunities and mentorship.

The venture aims to bring more disabled game designers into the industry at a time when many developers are still learning lessons about how to design games that are accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

AbleGamers is accepting applications for its two inaugural Fellowship grants through the end of October, at which point two applicants who meet the program's eligibility guidelines (which include being a 3rd/4th year undergraduate or graduate student at an accredited college/university enrolled in a computer science program focusing on some aspect of game development) will be selected by the Fellowship's selection committee.

The first pair of Fellows will each receive a $10,000 scholarship, mentorship opportunities from participating game industry professionals and the chance to take a paid internship with Gigantic developer (and program partner) Motiga.

“This is just the beginning,” AbleGamers founder Mark Bartlet stated in a press release announcing the program. “As our AbleGamers Fellowship continues to grow and new partners come on board, we’ll continue to enhance the program each and every year.”

For more details on where the program is at right now and how to apply for a fellowship, head over to the AbleGamers Fellowship website.
