World's first handheld Steam Machine lands on Kickstarter

December 10, 2015 | By Chris Kerr

Do you ever wish you could play high-end Steam games on the move, without having to invest in a super-powerful gaming laptop? Well, if the Smach Z team get their way, you could soon be doing just that.

Pegged as the world's first handheld Steam Machine, Smach Z is currently looking for funding on Kickstarter, with the team hoping to raise €900,000 ($986,000) to bring the portable console to life.

With 34 days to go the project has already received €100,000 ($110,000), so there's definitely some interest in the device, which would come with access to over 1000 games out of the box.

Taking cues from the Steam Controller, the console will feature configurable haptic controls to help players fine tune the system for individual games.

Smach Z will also pack over 5 hours of battery live, 4GB of ram, a low-power AMD Embedded G-Series SoC and APU, a 5 inch HD touch screen, and 64 GB of internal memory - although a MicroSD card slot will allow for easy expansion.

By squeezing every bit of juice out of the console, the Smach Z team are confident that the device will be "powerful enough to play any game on the market," such as Portal 2, SOMA, Borderlands 2, and Civilization V to name but a few.

If you're using the console at home, you'll also be able to stream games from your dedicated gaming PC via WiFi, allowing you to play titles that aren't supported by Steam OS, or require more processing power.
