Games as a service outfit PlayFab has moved towards a "fully free" pricing model following the launch of its new marketplace, which is aiming to reduce SDK fatigue by allowing developers to integrate key services from third-party vendors with the push of a button
In short, this means that developers will be now be able to access PlayFab's entire backend platform free of charge, leveraging core services such as authentication, player profiles, cloud scripting, in-game commerce, content management, multiplayer matchmaking, leader boards, reporting, in-game messaging, and more.
What's more, PlayFab won't be implementing a player cap, so the only time devs will ever have to splash the cash is when they want to access the premium marketplace or support services.
"This is the biggest productivity boost for game developers since Unity launched its asset store in 2010," said James Gwertzman, founder and CEO of PlayFab.
"By integrating PlayFab's unified operations console and core backend services with more specialized best-of-breed services from across the gaming ecosystem, we give game developers the flexibility they need to piece together the perfect backend for their game – and at a fraction of the cost or time of doing it from scratch."
This isn't the first time PlayFab has made headlines this year, with the company raising $7.4 million back in March.
