Amiibo shipments reach 31 million

Amiibo shipments reach 31 million

February 3, 2016 | By Christian Nutt

Nintendo has so far shipped 31 million units of its Amiibo figurines since their November 2014 introduction. They're most successful in North America, but Japan and Europe also buy them; additionally, the company has shipped 21.5 million individual Amiibo cards (which are sold in packs of three in Japan and Europe and six in North America.)

These numbers come from the company's most recent presentation to investors, which came alongside its recent quarterly financial results. The big Amiibo sales didn't let the company stave off a drop in sales and profits.

Shipments of Amiibo figurines reached a new height of 9.9 million in the company's most recent quarter, the three months ended December 31, 2015.

Notably, the company has yet to ship a large-scale, dedicated toys to life game along the lines of Skylanders or Disney Infinity that absolutely requires the figurines to be played.

On the other hand, sales of Splatoon Amiibos have been extremely robust, particularly in Japan. "We believe it was purchased along with Splatoon software which also sold well in the year-end sales season," said Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima, in his presentation to investors.

Below we present two of Nintendo's charts from that presentation, including one that breaks down the most popular Amiibos by region.
