UK dev studio Failbetter Games (Sunless Sea, Fallen London) is offering a new funding initiative for narrative-focused games. The studio already runs an incubation scheme for developers, but now intends to branch into offering funds for projects.
The studio is offering funding for projects in the "£2K-£20K range," or between $2,828 to$28,287 at current exchange rates. Though the company is preferential to UK-based projects, it will consider projects originating elsewhere.
"We’re open-minded on the meaning of ‘narrative’ and ‘game’. So this might include: games with a strong linear storyline; choice-based narratives using Twine or a similar technology; parser-based interactive fiction; strategy games where the choices have a storyful feel; card games where story emerges from the mechanics; or a dozen other things we haven’t thought of," the official blog post on the initiative says. "We particularly like text-centric games."
The company will recoup 50 percent of revenues until the intial investment is recovered, and thereafter 20 percent. "It’s project-based investment, so if we never make back our initial investment, you’re free to get on with your life," the blog post specifies.
Applications are now being accepted at the Failbetter website, which also has the full details of the program.
