VR studio lands $750,000 in funding for world-building game

March 30, 2016 | By Kris Graft

Continuing its expansion into the virtual reality market, Stockholm-based Starbreeze announced today a $750,000 publishing deal with Culver City’s Freeform Labs.

The deal, which pertains specifically to funding Freeform’s upcoming VR game ElemenTerra, reflects the game industry’s continuing heavy investment into the VR sector.

As part of the deal, Starbreeze will fund development of world-building game ElemenTerra, and take 50 percent of the royalties over the lifetime of the game. Freeform and Starbreeze will share intellectual property rights of the game, 50/50, Starbreeze said.

Freeform will also utilize Starbreeze’s LA offices. The studio is run by Max Pittsley, Camille Kanengiser and Ian Donahue, graduates of USC’s Games & Animation department.

Earlier this year, Starbreeze announced plans to open a VR arcade in L.A.
