Linden Lab opens up VR world Project Sansar to outside creators

Linden Lab opens up VR world Project Sansar to outside creators
April 26, 2016 | By Christian Nutt

Today Linden Lab announced that its in-development VR virtual world, Project Sansar, will open up to a select number of third-party creators immediately. The company is calling Sansar a "platform for user-created social VR experiences."

The company's most notable project is the virtual world Second Life, which has a similar approach to user generated content -- most of the world is created and maintained by individuals or third-party entities such as schools or media companies.

Project Sansar is slated to be released at the end of the year.

Speaking at the Collision conference today, Linden Lab CEO Ebbe Altberg said, "when all of us can actually produce and share and consume each others stuff, it just takes off like crazy. The same thing will happen with VR. Today it's only in the hands of technology organizations to produce immersive VR experiences," InfoQ reports.

Interested parties can apply for Project Sansar's creator preview now. Invites will go out "later this summer."

Linden Lab isn't the only company interested in the space. Second Life creator Philip Rosedale split from Linden Lab years ago, and is working on his own social VR platform, High Fidelity.
