Unity throws its support behind Google's new Daydream VR platform

Unity throws its support behind Google's new Daydream VR platform

May 19, 2016 | By Alex Wawro

Unity Technologies chief John Riccitiello briefly took the stage at Google's I/O developer conference today to confirm that the company will be updating its game development toolset to support Google's new Daydream mobile VR platform.

"We're...very much aware of Google's roadmap in VR, and we intend to be there every step of the way," said Riccitiello. "As part of that we're announcing support for Daydream. We'll be there, we are there; it'll be native inside of Unity."

He went on to note that Unity plans to launch support for OpenGL successor Vulkan next quarter, and went on to suggest mobile VR platforms (like Daydream) are key to expanding the audience for VR experiences.

Riccitiello's comments follow an announcement from Epic Games earlier today that its own Unreal Engine will be augmented to support Daydream, starting with a preview version of Unreal 4.12.

Daydream, of course, is a new Android-powered mobile VR platform with motion controllers, and Google expects to see the first wave of "Daydream-ready" phones shipping later this year.
