Facebook acquires VR audio startup Two Big Ears, makes tools free

May 23, 2016 | By Christian Nutt

Today, Facebook announced the acquisition of 360 audio startup Two Big Ears, whose Mac-based 3Dception for Games middleware product was catered towards VR game developers.

That product will be discontinued, as the company's middleware rolls into a free-to-download package dubbed the Facebook 360 Spatial Workstation.

Support for Windows and "more VR devices" than Oculus Rift is still forthcoming; "We will continue to be platform and device agnostic," the FAQ says.

All projects that have paid to license the product can continue to use it and will receive up to 12 months of support. You can find out more about what's going on by reading the 3Dception FAQ.

If you're interested in checking out Spatial Workstation, you can download it here for free. It currently works with Mac OS and exports spatial audio in a "range of formats."
