Patent filing teases Magic Leap virtual reality headset

Patent filing teases Magic Leap virtual reality headset

June 8, 2016 | By Chris Kerr

A new patent from mixed-reality outfit Magic Leap has given us a glimpse at what the company’s first virtual reality device might look like.

The patent was filed on May 14, 2015 and approved on June 7, and seeks to "claim the ornamental design for a virtual reality headset."

Unlike other VR devices such as the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, which take the form of strap-on goggles, Magic Leap’s headset sports a visor that would obscure most of the user's face.

The lenses themselves look to be hidden away behind that screen, as shown in the pictures below.

Despite keeping its reality-bending tech under wraps for the most part, Magic Leap has still managed to attract huge investors.

Earlier this week Chinese media group Zhejiang Huac announced plans to invest around $303 million in U.S. ventures, including a “small stake” in Magic Leap.

As it stands Magic Leap has raised well over $1 billion, with a huge portion of that cash coming from Chinese e-commerce giant, Alibaba, which recently led a $793.5 million funding round for the mixed-reality startup.
