Devil's Third multiplayer being laid to rest later this year

June 23, 2016 | By Chris Kerr

Nintendo will be shutting down the online services for Valhalla Games' action shooter, Devil’s Third, just over a year after it hit shelves.

Online services in the U.S., Europe, and Australasia will be terminated on December 28, 2016, while the Japanese servers will close on December 29.

The game first landed in Japan on August 4, 2015, and in the same month made its debut in Europe and Australasia. The title completed its global launch in the U.S. on December 11, 2015.

Despite being directed by Tomonobu Itagaki of Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive fame, the game was met with poor reviews, and subsequently struggled to make a meaningful sales impact.

Players who want to sample Devil’s Third's multiplayer offering before it's shuttered for good can nab the game at a cut-price, with Nintendo reducing the cost of the digital version from $59.99 to $29.99.

The company will also be discontinuing the sale of Golden Eggs -- Devil's Third's in-game currency -- on June 27 and 28. Naturally, the title's single-player portion won't be affected by the server shut down.
