Wolfenstein 3D and Doom developer id Software released another seminal first-person shooter, Quake, twenty years ago this week.
It's a nice way of paying tribute to a game that's influenced and inspired countless game developers, a bit of fresh content that deftly complements the archive of early Quake development materials that id cofounder John Romero published earlier this week.
Of course, there's a marketing angle to this as well: Machine Games and id Software are now both owned by Bethesda Softworks parent company ZeniMax Media. At E3 earlier this month, Bethesda and id announced plans to develop a new multiplayer-focused Quake game, Quake Champions.
