Let's say you've been promoted into a lead role on your game development team. Congratulations!
If you are like the majority of new team leads, then you might find it difficult to answer this question. Double Fine senior programmer Oliver Franzke certainly had some trouble adapting to his role as lead on Broken Age, and after talking to many fellow developers it quickly became clear to him that most team leads are expected to simply pick up the necessary skillset themselves.
That's why at GDC Europe 2015 Franzke delivered a talk about what he'd learned while settling into a leadership position that provides lots of practical advice on how new team leads can get started in their new role.
It was a very helpful rundown of a problem that's often tackled but rarely talked about in the game industry, and you can now watch the entire talk for free over on the official GDC YouTube channel.
In addition to this presentation, the GDC Vault and its new YouTube channel offers numerous other free videos, audio recordings, and slides from many of the recent Game Developers Conference events, and the service offers even more members-only content for GDC Vault subscribers.
Those who purchased All Access passes to recent events like GDC, GDC Europe, and GDC Next already have full access to GDC Vault, and interested parties can apply for the individual subscription via a GDC Vault subscription page. Group subscriptions are also available: game-related schools and development studios who sign up for GDC Vault Studio Subscriptions can receive access for their entire office or company by contacting staff via the GDC Vault group subscription page. Finally, current subscribers with access issues can contact GDC Vault technical support.
