Unity 5.4 sees a stable release, and a beta of 5.5 is in the works

Unity 5.4 sees a stable release, and a beta of 5.5 is in the works

July 28, 2016 | By Alex Wawro

Just a quick heads-up for Unity develeopers that the game engine company has today taken the "beta" tag off Unity 5.4 and made it available to devs as a stable release.

You can read a full rundown of what's new in version 5.4 via the Unity release notes -- the list encompasses everything from new analytics features to improved graphics/rendering performance and better VR platform support.

What's also notable here is that 5.4 is the first product of Unity's new forked-development approach, which it launched into during GDC earlier this year in an effort to assauge developers frustrated by (among other things) stability issues in the engine.

At the time, 5.4 was made available as a beta release alongside the stable 5.3.4 release. Now that 5.4 has become the latest stable Unity release, it seems the company intends to keep the program going -- a beta version of Unity 5.5 is slated to debut in the near future.
