Twitch buys VoIP and game community host Curse

Twitch buys VoIP and game community host Curse

August 16, 2016 | By Bryant Francis

Today Twitch announced that it’s agreed to acquire Curse, the video game-focused VoIP and community services provider that began its existence as a host for World of Warcraft mods, for an undisclosed sum.

The news comes by way of a Twitch blog post, which is scant on details regarding why the livestreaming platform has chosen to make this purchase, but it’s possible the company is interested in Curse’s Voice product, which attracted an investment from Riot Games this time last year.

Curse’s identity has been somewhat fluid in its 11-year history, acting originally as a mod and community hub for various MMORPGs, but changing its services to adapt to changes in the online game market.

The Curse app now directly competes with other applications like Discord, but the company still hosts mods for games ranging from Minecraft to Kerbal Space Program.
