The man best known for his early influence on the real-time strategy genre has resigned from his position as general manager of Wargaming’s Seattle studio.

Chris Taylor, founder of Gas Powered Games and designer of games like Dungeon Siege and Supreme Commander, has left his post at Wargaming to move towards independent game development.

He first joined Wargaming in 2013 and began work on an unannounced project. With that project still largely in the dark today, Taylor takes his leave from the company as well as a short vacation from game development to fight off potential burnout before jumping back into the ring with his own indie game studio.

There had been some speculation that Taylor would be using his RTS expertise to develop a game for the World of Tanks franchise after Wargaming acquired Taylor’s studio, Gas Powered Games, in 2013 but neither party has commented on the project Taylor was working on prior to his recent departure.

Taylor didn’t say much of anything about his next project either but he told VentureBeat that he was taking a short vacation from game development as a whole before starting up his next studio.

“Between Gas Powered Games and Wargaming, it was an 18 year stretch and I wore myself out and didn’t realize it,” said Taylor. “I’ve decided I need to take a few months off, regroup, and recharge before I dive into my next thing.”
