Video: Re-thinking how to move through your game career

August 25, 2017 | By Bryant Francis

Video game careers are hard. Skill requirements change, companies come and go, work that you spent months on may be cancelled and unshareable…if you got into the game industry thinking you would work your way up one specific ladder, you probably know by now that’s a very difficult task to accomplish.

But, never fear. What if there was a way to make every part of your life and work experience valuable to your career? At the 2017 Game Developers Conference, Nick Button-Brown of the British arts charity BAFTA (which has done much work supporting the games industry these last few years) took the stage to share a new framework for moving through your career in the game industry.

It’s an optimistic talk, trading traditional latter-shaped paths for a “lattice” framework, and one worth watching if you’re trying to make a shift in the business right now. You can watch the whole session up above or on the GDC YouTube channel for free.

About the GDC Vault

In addition to this presentation, the GDC Vault and its new YouTube channel offers numerous other free videos, audio recordings, and slides from many of the recent Game Developers Conference events, and the service offers even more members-only content for GDC Vault subscribers.

Those who purchased All Access passes to recent events like GDC, GDC Europe, and GDC Next already have full access to GDC Vault, and interested parties can apply for the individual subscription via a GDC Vault subscription page. Group subscriptions are also available: game-related schools and development studios who sign up for GDC Vault Studio Subscriptions can receive access for their entire office or company by contacting staff via the GDC Vault group subscription page. Finally, current subscribers with access issues can contact GDC Vault technical support.

Gamasutra and GDC are sibling organizations under parent UBM Americas
