Hawken dev ending PC support to 'refocus development efforts'

The developer behind the free-to-play game Hawken has announced that it will be ending support for the PC version of the title and will take its servers offline at the beginning of 2018.

The decision comes just three years after Hawken launched on Steam and only two years after APB dev Reloaded Games acquired the project from its original developer, Adhesive Games. The game is currently being developed by Hawken Entertainment.

While this doesn’t mark the end for Hawken—the game will seemingly live on through its PlayStation 4 and Xbox One ports—this announcement does serve as a rather unfortunate reminder to fellow devs of one the risks of maintaining an online game.

According to a Facebook post from the developer, all paid content is being removed from sale today though the game will remain online until January 2, 2018. At that point, however, Hawken will be removed from Steam and its servers will be taken offline for good.

The post noted that the decision was made to help refocus its development efforts, though the announcement didn’t mention anything in regards to the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One versions of the game launched just last year.

“It’s been an incredible journey since the introduction of Hawken on Steam, back in 2014. The game’s success has been largely due to your continuous support. The Hawken community has been the cornerstone of this ever-evolving franchise,” reads the post. “It’s been an incredibly rewarding experience working alongside such a dedicated PC player base. Your feedback and support has been invaluable to us, and the team looks forward to creating more great games based on what we’ve learned from you."
