In Respawn Entertainment's popular Titanfall series of mech-enhanced first-person shooters, players have the option to leap aboard and "rodeo" giant robots (the titular Titans) -- but the effect of doing so changed significantly from game to game.

At GDC 2017, Respawn's Chin Xiang Chong gave attendees a guided tour of the development of rodeo, revealing early prototypes, meditating on the lessons learned, and discussing the difficulties involved in making sure that both titan and pilot understand exactly what is happening during rodeo.

Plus, he explained the factors that convinced Respawn to make large, sweeping changes to rodeo for Titanfall 2, offering insight into how a system that seems core to your game can be changed without diluting what makes your game special.

It was a great talk, and now you can watch it completely free over on the official GDC Vault YouTube channel!

About the GDC Vault

In addition to this presentation, the GDC Vault and its new YouTube channel offers numerous other free videos, audio recordings, and slides from many of the recent Game Developers Conference events, and the service offers even more members-only content for GDC Vault subscribers.

Those who purchased All Access passes to recent events like GDC, GDC Europe, and GDC Next already have full access to GDC Vault, and interested parties can apply for the individual subscription via a GDC Vault subscription page. Group subscriptions are also available: game-related schools and development studios who sign up for GDC Vault Studio Subscriptions can receive access for their entire office or company by contacting staff via the GDC Vault group subscription page. Finally, current subscribers with access issues can contact GDC Vault technical support.
