Free-to-play Fortnite: Battle Royale surpasses 811k concurrent players

October 31, 2017 | By Alissa McAloon

Fortnite: Battle Royale, Epic Games’ multi-platform take on the emerging Battle Royale genre, has seemingly kept up its early momentum since first launching just over a month ago.

According to the developer, Fortnite’s free to play Battle Royale mode saw as many as 811,000 peak concurrent players this past Sunday.

That’s a jump of 286,000 simultaneous play sessions since the number reported just over three weeks ago and notably a sizable enough crowd to compete with the recent daily concurrent players shown on Steam for Valve’s Dota 2, though Fortnite: Battle Royale itself isn’t on the platform.

Fornite: Battle Royale does have a number of things going for it that have no doubt helped it reach 800,000 concurrents in just over a month. The game itself is infamously similar to the massively popular battle royale title PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, so much so that PUBG's developer Bluehole publicly spoke against the game.

Those similarities, coupled with the fact that Fortnite: Battle Royale both was released as a free-to-play game and launched on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC simultaneously, seem to have given the colorful take on the genre a bit of an edge.
