How Floor Kids translates breakdancing into game design

June 1, 2018 | By Bryant Francis

Floor Kids isn't like a lot of other games that have found success on the Nintendo Switch. It's a rhythm game but doesn't need the player to hit all the beats, it has freestyle dance moves but also encourages players to build combos. It's a game about the world of breakdancing, and it's made in part by two artists who lived in the world of music before they became game designers.

Today over on the Gamasutra Twitch channel, we got to talk with DJ/musician Kid Koala and artist/animator JonJon about their experience teaming up as artists and finding a game design team that could bring their vision of a b-boy/b-girl game to life. It's a story about animation & music inspiring each other, about translating mobile game mechanics to the Nintendo Switch, and about finding collaborators who spoke their language even while coming from different backgrounds.

For your convenience, we've embedded our conversation with the duo up at the top of this article. If it's a chat that catches your interest, be sure to follow the Gamasutra Twitch channel for more great developer interviews!
